Denis is a musical mind. Raised in Russia, he was imbued with an appetite for worldly things and women. Once in the USA, beneath the boardwalk at Coney Island, Denis became a curator of heavy classical, ghetto gypsy music, thugg'd out southern beats, with a encyclopedic knowledge of eff'd up foreign film dialogue . The laws of physics have no grip in his world as he channels the spirit of Forest Swords and ‘Does It Look Like I’m Here’ era Emeralds alongside house timbres, west-African shuffles, and  German children's bedtime funk.

As a resident UNO DJ, sense the camaraderie between this mix and fellow-city 'future shit' from Mr. UNO (Mix #8). Rolling with a hard crew of artists, punks and hobos, you may find Denis chasing photos of rats in the NYC subway, and taking off in a '95 Benz. When you bump this, imagine the handsome USSR animal in front of his iPad, pounding sounds through his monolithic monitors into the early Brooklyn morning.

LOOKOUT Mix #9 – LOL Boys

At first glance LOL Boys might appear to be  your typical globetrotting electronic music artists of the 21st century. They live in different countries (one half with us here in Montreal and the other in LA), put out music in a variety of formats on a variety of labels, and draw on musical influences from all corners of the globe.  Get into the specifics though and it becomes clear that LOL Boys are anything but average. Just take a look at the labels they've worked with: influential Swedish label Discobelle (a home to man of the moment Brenmar) and LA based label Friends of Friends (home to Salva and Shlohmo and a Resident Advisor 'Label of the Month' to boot). Most exciting is their forthcoming release on up-and-coming NYC label UNO, which you might know from our last mix from label head Mr. UNO. Despite what the name might insinuate, its becoming clear that LOL Boys are growing into a mature fix in the realm of future dance music.

In their exclusive mix, LOL Boys show us how they've managed to turn the ear of so many influential tastemakers in contemporary electronic music. Whether pulling from Boddika's acid-infused flex, Mosca's intricate rhythms or the bump-n-grind of Soulja Boy LOL Boys always mix their tracks with a confidence that is downright sexy. Mr. Uno is future shit. Growing up in New York City, Mr. got his start wrangling teenagers at all nite chinatown loft parties- and grew a passion for large rooms of dancing people. The Monsieur's taste for wild, underground, fabulous dance tunes culminated with the inception of his UNO NYC record label.  An expression of things new and danceworthy, UNO has already made connections to Montreal with releases from Jacques Greene and CFCF. His mix touches on influential future shit as well as many forthcoming treats we'll be dancing to in the next year.

Montreal native Tronald Trump is a man of many different styles/sounds/flavors. Over the last 8 years he has been earning his stripes playing clubs, bars, backyards, basements, fashion shows... You name it!

Getting put on by Skratch Bastid at his infamous Thursday night at Blizzarts, Tron got to flex what he had for a demanding crowd all while having one of the best mentors a thriving DJ could ask for. With this more moves were made, having known Guilty for years they decided to started up there own weekly night at Lola Lounge (RIP). This led to regular gigs around the city including the late great CODA (I will never forget that night with the legend Dj Premier), some only pictures could explain all night house jams, and he was on the Le Spank (Saturdays at Blue Dog) team during it's nearly 3 year run.

No matter how chique or shitty, the setting doesn't matter as much when you got the right music.

LOOKOUT Mixtape #5: LUNICE “Pretty Boy” Mixxx

Recently signed to Scottish-born LuckyMe label, Lunice is poised to bring his infectious hybrid of hyphy/turbo-crunk/jerk/boom-bap to a much, much wider audience. Between a European tour with fellow MTLien Hovatron, a collaboration with Diplo, and the imminent release of his Stacker Upper EP on LuckyMe, Lunice is keeping himself busy. Still, he managed to find time to make us a little mix, just as a reminder that he is a maniac.

A blend of club hip hop and neo-soul injected with Lunice's unmistakeable turbo touch, the mix is a 42 minute long grimey club banger. The sound is familiar, but this is a more mature and confident producer, and frankly, we're excited. Get acquainted with the new and improved Lunice swag, but be careful-- your face might get stuck like that.

LOOKOUT Mixtape #3: Poirier – “Sud-West”

The Montreal don Poirier draws on reggae and dub for the piping hot riddim roundabout he put together for the third LOOKOUT mixtape. Much like Spectacular says on the track featured, Poirier is badder than dem, madder than dem and rougher than dem. The vibe is exactly that, but even so, culminates in a smooth tropical sound.

Named after Poirier and Ghostbeard's Sud-West party at Montreal's Lachine Canal, this mix is a must listen for patio lovers, and winter hermits alike. Much like the traveling DJ/producer, the Sud-West mix goes all around the Caribbean with conscious island jams from Mr Vegas, Alborosie, Richie Spice and more. Skank away.
