RBMA Spotlight: Lunice

Lunice Fermin Pierre II has taken over the asylum! In little over a year, he’s taken hold of the electronic beats scene across Canada and the US, and set ears and heads ablaze with his mixture of beats, bass, and splintered electronica. Taking cues from Warp, Bangladesh, Dilla, and Ed Banger, Lunice knows exactly how to craft a recipe that makes dance floors bump and bass bins thump. With remixes forthcoming on Big Dada, Young Turks and a solo EP on LuckyMe, Lunice will be conducting the sound of clubland for a long time to come.

Hey Lunice, can you tell us a little about yourself?
I’m 22, from Montreal, Quebec and I love rap music.

Congrats on the release of the Stacker Upper EP on LuckyMe Records. What made you want to release this EP?
Thanks! Releasing my first solo EP was one of my biggest goals since day one. I’ve always had the idea of releasing an EP. I felt that I wouldn’t work on it until I feel that I’m ready and that the sound I’m experimenting on at that moment would make sense for a release. Now my next goal is to release another record!

You are so energetic on stage, not to mention your fancy footwork in LunicexLAZERSWORDS Gucci Sweatshirt . Do you feel live producers / DJs should look to become performers on stage?
Not really. Producers & DJs should do whatever seems to fit for their set. I never intended to “perform” on stage, it just sort of happened after numerous alcoholic drinks and me going in front wildin’ out with the crowd and having the time of my life, haha. I guess since I used to be a full-time B-Boy/dancer, I was naturally able to do cool moves which to me seemed like “whatever, I’m drunk” dancing, but to people it seemed like “whoa cool moves!”. I’m used to performing infront of crowds at breakdance shows,so I’ve gotten used to sending a certain type of energy to the crowd and having them respond back in the same way.

RBMA Spotlight: Ango

Montreal beatsmith Ango shot out of the 2010 Red Bull Music Academy in London like a rocket launcher. After years spent playing the legendary MTL Turbo Crunk parties alongside Lunice and Megasoid, Ango has spent the past year linking up with Glasgow label LuckyMe and performing all over the world, including a set at Barcelona’s famed Sonar Fest featuring tons of unreleased material. You can check out a recording of that seminal set, along with others from his time in London, from within the RBMA Radio archives

Ango’s sound matured and developed remarkably during his time at the 2010 RBMA, adding a polish that was absent from his earlier proto-R&B incantations. All that energy and focus has been harnessed in his new, refreshingly manic, performance style, captured below:

To be fully prepared for Cubic Zirconia‘s live show this Friday, February 11 at Club Lambi, it’d be best to grab hold of the new EP of remixes their label LuckyMe recently made available for free online.

Frontman Nick Hook calls his group “live ethnic disco,” but reworkings from club stalwarts Egyptrixx and Ikonika and left field G-Synth master Dam Funk spread and/or skewer the sound all over the dance music spectrum. The remixes come in advance of the NYC four-piece’s upcoming album Follow Your Heart.

After an incredibly breakthrough 2009 that saw the massive critical and popular success of Hudson Mohawke, Rustie and Mike Slott with releases on Warp, All City and more, it seemed unlikely that Glaswegian label LuckyMe could top the level of excitement in the year to follow. However in the last year, they’ve expanded the label worldwide, adding several North American acts that have become some of the most talked about in the electronic music world, including Jacques Greene, Lunice, Ango, Machinedrum, and Cubic Zirconia. Machinedrum

New label mate Machinedrum will be present as well, riding off his stellar new releases on LuckyMe and on Hotflush as his new garage/future dubstep project Sepalcure. With a combination of the songwriting skills of Timbaland, the huge club sounds of Daft Punk and the crafty experimentation of Aphex Twin, Machinedrum will take us all on quite the musical ride.

Jacques Greene

Jacques Greene hails from Montreal, Canada, and you may or may not have heard some music he made under a previous guise. It doesn’t really matter. His current focus is glistening house music with the perfect balance of reverence and idiosyncrasy, and an unashamed devotion to R’n'B. Releases with LuckyMe and NightSlugs have announced his arrival in the house music world in fine style, and hint at a pretty good year to come.

Lunice

Lunice is just THAT dude. So cool, so easy. But at night he’s a monster making bedroom dance videos to Footcrab and Sex Intelligent (remix stoopid). It was just over a year ago that Lunice started bumping his own beats at the Turbo Crunk nights. To think that he’s since played two European tours and attended Red Bull in London, cheeeez, Dude is doing those big things already.

Recently signed to Scottish-born LuckyMe label, Lunice is poised to bring his infectious hybrid of hyphy/turbo-crunk/jerk/boom-bap to a much, much wider audience. Between a European tour with fellow MTLien Hovatron, a collaboration with Diplo, and the imminent release of his Stacker Upper EP on LuckyMe, Lunice is keeping himself busy. Still, he managed to find time to make us a little mix, just as a reminder that he is a maniac.

A blend of club hip hop and neo-soul injected with Lunice’s unmistakeable turbo touch, the mix is a 42 minute long grimey club banger. The sound is familiar, but this is a more mature and confident producer, and frankly, we’re excited. Get acquainted with the new and improved Lunice swag, but be careful– your face might get stuck like that.
